  76.  Shareware is a "try-before-you-buy"  method of selling software. In

  81.  public  about what  software was  available. Distributing Shareware
  82.  software  through computer  bulletin  boards  was the  very logical
  83.  solution  that soon  became  standard  procedure for  all Shareware
  84.  authors. By allowing programs to be copied from bulletin boards and
  85.  shared  with few  restrictions, Shareware  is able  to reach a much
  86.  greater number of users.

  138.  The shareware concept makes it possible for you to obtain extremely
  139.  powerful software at  a price you can afford, and  it gives you the
  140.  opportunity to try the software before you register.
  141.  The   Association   of   Shareware   Professionals   (ASP),  is  an
  142.  organization  formed to strengthen  the  future of  shareware.  Its
  143.  members, all  of whom are programmers  that subscribe to a  code of
  144.  ethics, are  committed to the concept  of shareware as a  method of
  145.  marketing.
  146.  The ASP sets standards for its members and their shareware products
  147.  which provide  (among other things)  that programs produced  by ASP
  148.  members must be fully documented, non-crippled, and offered with at
  149.  least a minimum level of support.  It also  sets the  standards for
  150.  shareware  disk  vendors  and  provides  information to  the public
  151.  about shareware.
  152.  Shareware  software is  a  unique  marketing approach  which allows
  153.  consumers to  purchase  software  directly  from  the author.  This
  154.  eliminates  costly  marketing,  promotion,  and packaging; allowing
  155.  consumers  to  obtain  quality  software   at  a  fraction  of  the
  156.  commercial  cost.  Shareware  authors  allow  their  programs to be
  157.  copied and  distributed with few restrictions.  Shareware users are
  158.  encouraged  to  examine  a  program,  copy  it,  and  pass it on to
  159.  friends.  If users find the software program useful, they are asked
  160.  to register with the software author.  This usually  means paying a
  161.  registration fee directly to the  shareware author.  In  return for
  162.  this  registration fee,  "registered  users"  receive the  right to
  163.  continue  to  use  the  software  and  added  benefits such as full
  164.  documentation,  technical  support,  and   future  updates  of  the
  165.  program.
  166.  Registration is the key to  success for the  shareware concept.  If
  167.  you try  a program and  it does  not  meet your needs,  you are not
  168.  expected to register.  However, if you try a  program, like it, and
  169.  continue  to  use  it,  you  should  compensate  the  author with a
  170.  registration fee.  Registration also insures further development of
  171.  the  program.  Shareware  is  the  "try-before-you-buy"   method of
  172.  software  distribution that  will  literally  save you  hundreds of
  173.  dollars on software purchases.

  204.  of the shareware  program.  These  authors work  many long hours to
  205.  produce  and  test  these  programs  that  are on the SoftwareVAULT

  208.  The registration price for a shareware is usually very small ($5.00
  209.  -  $85.00 US).  Registering  a  program  brings  with it additional
  210.  benefits.  In most cases, you  will get the  latest version  of the
  211.  program  and   a  printed  manual.  Most   shareware  programs  are
  212.  constantly  being improved  so when  you register,  there is a good
  213.  chance  that  you  will  get  a  newer  version  the  one  you  are

  726.  resources  of every  size and  variety. To  help you  find your way
  727.  through this  sea of software,  we have included  the SoftwareVAULT
  728.  Librarian program.
  729.  The SoftwareVAULT Librarian is a program that:
  730.  (1) Lets you  sort through the thousands of  programs and resources
  731.      the SoftwareVAULT collections.
  732.  (2) Helps you find programs that interest you.
  733.  (3) Helps  you to transfer  these files and  programs to your  hard
  734.      drive so that you can use them.
  735.  Please note that to use  SoftwareVAULT files you MUST transfer them
  736.  to your hard drive!
  737.  The files on the CD are  compressed and must  be "UNZIPPED" to your
  738.  hard  drive so  they can  be accessed.  (Don't worry, the Librarian
  739.  does this automatically  for you. We "ZIP" our files  up so that we
  740.  can include more software  on each SoftwareVAULT collection, giving
  741.  you more value for your dollar.)
  742.            TUTORIAL: HOW TO USE THE FILES ON THIS DISC           
  743.  You can  use any of  the thousands of  programs and resources  on a
  744.  SoftwareVAULT Collection with just a few easy steps...
  745.  Step 1:  Use one of the "GROUP" buttons to  narrow your search to a
  746.           specific  group of  areas, press  the button  that you are
  747.           most interested in  and you will be presented  with a list
  748.           of  "AREAS". These  "AREAS"  are  a special  collection of
  749.           files covering a specific  subject. Select the "AREA" that
  750.           interestes you  most and press the  "ENTER" key. This will
  751.           give  you a  long list  of files,  each followed  by a one
  752.           sentence description of what that file does. Once you find
  753.           one that looks interesting, you will have several options.
  754.  Step 2:  a. Press "ENTER" to examine the contents of the "ZIP" file
  755.              of view the "GIF" file (picture).
  756.           b. Press the "F6" function  key to view a long description
  757.              of the file. Not all files have  a long description, so
  758.              don't be surprised if it's the same as the one-sentence
  759.              description.
  760.           c. Press the "F10" function key  to copy the file or unzip
  761.              the file  to your hard  drive. Unless you're  a veteran
  762.              SoftwareVAULT  user,  "examine  the  file contents" and
  763.              "copying  the   file  to  your  hard   disk"  might  be
  764.              confusing. THE OPTION YOU  ALMOST ALWAYS NEED TO SELECT
  765.              IS  "UNZIP TO  HARD  DRIVE".  Selecting "Unzip  to hard
  766.              drive" will decompress the file and will transfer it to
  767.              your computer.
  768.  Step 3:  Select the drive and name a directory in which to put your
  769.           file. Once  you've chosen to  unzip the file  to your hard
  770.           disk,  a  directory  selection  menu  will  appear on your
  771.           screen. Choose  the directory you  would like to  hold the
  772.           file. IT'S USUALLY  A GOOD IDEA TO CREATE  A NEW DIRECTORY
  773.           FOR A  ZIP FILE. Don't worry.  The SoftwareVAULT Librarian
  774.           can do this automatically. Simply  make up a new directory
  775.           name and type it in  the directory box. The Librarian will
  776.           ask you if you want to "create the directory", and when it
  777.           does, answer "Yes".
  778.  Step 4:  Use your file. Exit the Librarian and  go to the directory
  779.           you created to hold your file. You will discover that your
  780.           one ZIP  file has probably decompressed  into a collection
  781.           of smaller files. To start  the program, look for the file
  782.           with an ".EXE"  on the end of it's name.  This is the main
  783.           executable for  the program. Running  it should start  the
  784.           program! Executable files may also have a ".COM" extension
  785.           or a ".BAT" extension.

  787.  1) FILE
  788.      1.   a) Change CD-ROM
  789.           Select   "Change  CD-ROM"   to  use   other  SoftwareVAULT
  790.           Collections. When  you select "Change  CD-ROM" be sure  to
  791.           place disc you would like to use in your CD-ROM drive.
  792.           Note: In  order to change  to a specific  CD-ROM disc, you
  793.           must have  specified that you  would like to  install that
  794.           disc  during the  installation procedure.  Also, make sure
  795.           that the correct data path  and drive have been specified.
  796.           If you  are running directly from  the CD-ROM, this option
  797.           will be disabled.
  798.      1.   b) Exit
  799.           Select "Exit" to exit the SoftwareVAULT Librarian.
  800.      1.   c) Export Files Listing
  801.           Saves a partial  or complete list of the  files with their
  802.           one line descriptions to a variety of file formats. Select
  803.           the file format and the category listings you wish to have
  804.           saved.
  805.      1.   d) Print Files Listing/Printer Setup
  806.           Prints  a files  listing and  configures your  printer for
  807.           printing.  For the  appropriate configuration,  check your
  808.           system and your printer instructions.

  810.           Allows you  to exit the Librarian  temporarily to use DOS.
  811.           Type "Exit" at the DOS prompt to return to the Librarian.

  813.      "Contents" allows you to explore SoftwareVAULT in two different
  814.      ways with either "Group Browser" or "Category Browser". It also
  815.      contains "Hottest Hits Info" and "Statistics".
  816.      2.   b) Group Browser
  817.           Brings up  an array of  buttons. Each button  highlights a
  818.           certain topic  of software. Click  on a button  to explore
  819.           the  categories contained  in  that  group. Clicking  on a
  820.           specific category will bring up a complete list of all the
  821.           programs and resources contained in that category. See the
  822.           Tutorial section of this help file to see how to use these

  825.           If  you  don't  want  to  use  the  group buttons, you can
  826.           explore  the  entire  database.  Clicking  on  a  specific
  827.           category will bring up a complete list of all the programs

  850.           Allows  you  to  run  a  keyword  search  to find files on
  851.           certain subjects. Type a keyword into the "Find Text" box.

  854.           with subjects  related to your  keyword. See the  Tutorial

  858.      The  text files  contain information  on how  the SoftwareVAULT
  859.      collections are  assembled and how  you can register  shareware

  863.      other SoftwareVAULT  collections. You can either  view a master
  864.      list  for all  the SoftwareVAULT  collections or  you can  view
  865.      lists  for specific  collections.  The  viewer used  to examine
  866.      these files can  search the list for keywords  as well as print
  867.      them out.
